Any of you remember Knuth's 1978 paper on Carry propagation in
"Indagationes
Mathematicae"? It means that de Bruijn will be 80 next year...

We find the type of analysis Knuth performs therein also in 
Longest Runs, 
Compositions, 
and variations of these.

Do you [I mean the readers of this list] know of more
connections? Perhaps you have some pointers to the literature?
